Concept of magical education in D. W. Jones’s novel “Year of the Griffin”

Abstract. The study aims to identify the principles of magical education as presented by D. W. Jones in the novel “Year of the Griffin”, a sequel to the work “Dark Lord of Derkholm”. The paper examines the concept of a magical university in a secondary fantasy world, in a state of crisis following the so-called “tours” described in the first novel of the duology, which globally affects the system of wizard education. The scientific novelty of the study lies in the fact that the novel “Year of the Griffin” remains outside the scientific interests of fantasy scholars, as it is recognized by readers as not the most successful work by D. W. Jones, but, nevertheless, it is indicative in terms of embodying the concept of magical education and allows us not only to systematize for the first time the principles of depicting a university for wizards in the stated novel, but also to highlight the intersections with the problems of modern education. As a result, it was found that D. W. Jones, unlike many other authors who address the stated problem, rejects the principle of hierarchy and complex structuring of the magical education institution, but focuses on the general problems of education in a society that is going through a period of economic and worldview crisis.
