Explanatory function of titles in educational discourse (by the material of English textbooks on economic law)

Abstract. The purpose of the study is to identify the mechanisms of implementation of the explanatory function of titles. The article examines the changes taking place in the use of punctuation marks in connection with the expansion of their functionality, systematizes the logical connections that arise between the two parts of titles separated by a colon. The authors found that in textbooks on economic law, titles consisting of two components separated by a colon have a high explanatory potential. The scientific novelty of the study lies in the fact that the explanation mechanisms involved in the titles are described for the first time using the material of the English-language educational discourse. As a result of the study, it was revealed that the most common title models in textbooks on economic law are as followers: the first part contains the actual name of the thematic block, and the second part indicates the section being paid attention to, and the material of official document or court case. The explanatory function of the title becomes the leading one in educational discourse, which implies the frequent appearance of titles containing clarification in the second part following the colon.
