Migrant-phobic discourse of ethnic virtual communities on the social network “VKontakte”

Abstract. This article is dedicated to the study of migrant-phobic discourse in ethnic virtual communities. The aim of the research is to identify the characteristics of this discourse in online spaces. The scientific novelty of the research is that, for the first time, migrant-phobic discourses were identified and analyzed based on the content of two ethnic virtual communities. The study by the author identified the actors of migrant-phobic discourse, examined similarities and distinctive features of confrontational content, typified various forms of “hostile language”. Special attention was given to linguistic means and speech techniques for manipulating information, defining the key frame and script. The migrant-phobic discourse shapes the opinion that migrants pose a direct threat to the country. This article is intended for researchers studying migrant phobia, xenophobia, extremism, ethnicity, and online communities.
