Semantic features of some colour lexemes and the problem of their interlanguage transmission (based on the novel “In a Thousand Different Ways” by the Irish author C. Ahern)

Abstract. The purpose of this study is to describe the interlanguage transmission of the colour lexemes “зеленый” / “green”, “желтый” / “yellow”, “розовый” / “pink”, “белый” / “white” in Russian and English linguistic cultures by highlighting their semantic characteristics. The article considers the usual meanings of colour concepts recorded in dictionaries, as well as occasional semes that arise within the framework of a modern work of art. An important stage of the research was the analysis of particular problems of translation of colour nominations. The scientific novelty of the article consists in the fact that for the first time the work examines and undergoes a comprehensive linguistic and cultural analysis of the colouronyms from the novel “In a Thousand Different Ways” by the Irish author Cecelia Ahern. Based on the translation of the work performed by T. V. Kamyshnikova, complex sections of the text containing colour lexemes are identified, the difficulties of their interpretation and translation are analyzed. The results of the study demonstrate the presence of the emotive potential of colour nominations. Colouronyms perform not only a nominative function, but also act in the form of comparisons, symbols and metaphors, thereby creating a vivid and imaginative picture of the world in a literary text.
