Abstract. The research aims to identify the means of conveying optativity as a crucial modal category in the Russian and Kabardian languages. The article shows that these languages feature emotional-expressive and modal meanings conveyed by lexico-grammatical and syntactic means oriented toward expressing desirability. The research novelty lies in the fact that it is the first work to compare ways of expressing optativity in Russian and Kabardian based on scholarly works in this field and practical materials from various sources. The description of the ways to explicate the category of optative modality was based on texts of literary discourse. As a result of the research, it was found that different language resources are activated in different language systems to express modal meanings. In Russian, according to the analysis of more than 120 microtexts, only analytical ways of expressing optativity (particles and modal words) were identified, while in the Kabardian language, out of 97 fragments of texts, synthetic ways are presented: the use of affixes added to verb roots. The analysis showed that both languages have lexical elements that convey desirability, which confirms its mental essence.
Key words and phrases: модальность, категория оптативности, желательность, аналитические и синтетические способы, художественный дискурс, modality, category of optativity, desirability, analytic and synthetic ways, literary discourse
