Depiction of the steppe in the realistic works by A. S. Pushkin

Abstract. The article considers the embodiment of the steppe space in the works of A. S. Pushkin, in which realism was the predominant method. The aim of the study is to identify the features of the image of the steppe in the 1830s prose works of the writer. The scientific novelty consists in highlighting the image of the steppe among other natural images, as well as in identifying its functions in the writer’s texts. Landscape sketches associated with the steppe space are characterized by conciseness and a desire for objectivity of the depicted. The author perceives the steppe as a temporary background of his journey, and often with a negative emotional coloring (sadness, longing, monotony, etc.). The mythopoetic image of the steppe created by Pushkin is not idealized (which was more typical for the romantic method). Reproducing the image of the steppe space and characterizing the steppe peoples, the writer gives them negative traits (for example, the savagery of the East and its opposition to civilized Europe are repeatedly emphasized in the image of the steppe). The results showed that the steppe space performs several functions in еру texts: plot-compositional, background, emotional, etc. Its appearance in the text is often situational, dictated by the plot circumstances of the narrative.
