Role of gastronomic and culinary metaphors in the works of XX-century Russian literature (by the example of the novella “Hostess” by I. Grekova)

Abstract. The aim of the study is to determine the features of use and the role of gastronomic and culinary metaphors in the works of XX-century Russian literature using the example of the novella “Hostess” by I. Grekova. With the help of these metaphors, the author forms the general storyline of the work, the cornerstone of which is the image of the main character and her fundamental pillars of life – everyday life and family. The scientific novelty of the study lies in the author’s analysis of the use and the role of culinary and gastronomic metaphors in the construction of the storyline of the work using the example of I. Grekova’s novella “Hostess”. This is due to the fact that culinary shows have become very popular recently. It can be assumed that representatives of modern Russian society after a certain life period the main goals of which were career growth and achieving a stable financial level return in this way to the system of eternal spiritual values, where family and its needs are in the first place, which, no doubt, is associated with the family hearth in culinary terms. This social concept involves the actualisation of culinary and gastronomic lexical units, as well as their wider application in the thesaurus of native speakers both in the direct and figurative meaning (the phenomenon of polysemy), which could not but be reflected in metaphors. The results showed that gastronomic and culinary metaphors are an important component in the construction of the storyline in the novella “Hostess” as one of the fundamental characteristics that form the image of the main character.
