Abstract. The research aims to identify the typological differences of contrast and contradiction within the syntactic structure of English and Bulgarian proverbs as one of the features of paremiological antonymy manifested at all levels of the paremiological system. The comparative analysis is carried out within the semantic and the pragmatic trend in modern linguistics based on the material of genetically different but typologically similar languages that belong to the same group of analytical languages. The research is novel in that it is the first to study and describe the specificity of the constructions with the meaning of contrast and contradiction within the syntactic structures of English and Bulgarian proverbial parallels to Russian proverbs belonging to the paremiological core. Contrast and contradiction are the core features of proverbial formulae/models. The concepts of contrast and contradiction, accepted in Russian and foreign linguistics, are distinguished in the article. The types of adversative relations are identified. English and Bulgarian proverbs of the similar logico-semantic group can have different types of adversative meanings or relations. As a result, a similarity in the syntactic structures and semantic content of proverbial parallels of Biblical origin or related to global proverbs has been revealed.
Key words and phrases: противопоставление, пословица, пословичные параллели, паремиологический минимум, contrast and contradiction, proverb, proverbial parallels, paremiological core
