Value meanings of a literary text in the aspect of textual modality (based on the material of A. I. Kuprin’s fairy tale “The Blue Star”)

Abstract. The aim of the research is to determine the correlations of value meanings of a literary text and different-level markers of textual modality organized in accordance with the author’s intention. The scientific novelty lies in projecting the study of textual modality as a functional-pragmatic and text-forming category onto the value-meaningful space of a literary text hierarchically organized and naturally having a special influence on the addressee. Differentiation of evaluativeness and textual modality occurs in the paper on the basis of a special organization of the semantic space of a literary text: in some cases, the author’s assessment is not marked, there are only conflicting assessments of artistic reality exclusively in the character sphere, which suggests the communication of values by means of textual modality. The author’s evaluativeness is decoded based on the outcomes of the addressee’s receptive and interpretative activity. As a result, it has been found that value meanings in a literary text are emotionally charged, characterized by evaluativeness and marked by means of textual modality. It has been determined that the value meanings in A. I. Kuprin’s fairy tale “The Blue Star” are systemically ambivalent, which is due to the conflict of assessments in the character zone of the narrative. It has been revealed that different-level means of textual modality represent an important mechanism for the organization of value meanings as a component of the individual author’s worldview.
