The spiritual space of the Nilo-Sorsky Monastery in the book “Journey to the Kirillo-Belozersky Monastery...” by S. P. Shevyrev

Abstract. The aim of the study is to characterize the features peculiar to the artistic structure of the spatial image of the Nilo-Sorsky monastery in S. P. Shevyrev’s book “Journey to the Kirillo-Belozersky Monastery…” (1850). The scientific novelty of the study is accounted for by the fact that the work itself is little known, by the localization of the research subject (the image of the Nilo-Sorsky Monastery) and the emphasis on the philosophical and geographical categories of “frontier”, “topos”, “locus”, “cultural landscape” as research aspects. The paper traces the connection of “Journey…” with the “Russian idea” of the writer and his work “The History of Russian Literature”; demonstrates the significance of the image of St. Nilus of Sora as a key figure of Russian medieval thought; characterizes the specificity of the spatial-geographical method of research. Special attention is paid to the specifics of space in the writer’s book: details of frontier poetics, a combination of an ekphrastic (local) view of space and a topological one. As a result, it is shown that the “Journey…” combines factual descriptions of the essay genre and historiosophical generalizations: Shevyrev revealed the integrity of the cultural landscape of the Nilo-Sorsky skete and saw the connection of the spatial organization of the monastery with the ideas of non-acquisitiveness and mental prayer.
