Specifics of the Author’s Strategy of V. P. Aksenov’s Novel “In Search of a Genre”

Abstract. The paper deals with the analysis of the novel “In Search of a Genre” by the largest representative of the 1960s-1970s Moscow underground V. P. Aksenov in the aspect of its narrative structure, which is explained by the prose writer’s well-known predilection for creating playful, experimental forms in genre, plot-thematic, narrative terms. The aim of the paper is to identify the specifics of the author’s strategy of the novel. The study is original in that it is the first to comprehend the experimental novel “In Search of a Genre” in the specified aspect. As a result, the researchers have found that firstly, the author’s mask, meta-narrative elements, the play on biographism (the wearer of the author’s mask is given episodes of the author’s own biography, reflections of the “real author” about creativity and about himself) are the key components of the author’s strategy of the novel; secondly, remarks, which balance the “voices” of the principal character and the narrator, in addition to the change of narrative instances become the markers of the narrative game in the text of “In Search of a Genre”; thirdly, the main character, whose image and “word” erase the boundaries of the author’s textual reality, is the wearer of the author’s mask.
