Abstract. The paper deals with the conceptual metaphor VIRUS IS AN ENEMY as a phenomenon of language and speech. The research aims to describe the structure and content of the conceptual metaphor VIRUS IS AN ENEMY, verbalised in the texts of English-language mass media. The research is novel in that it is the first to consider the conceptual metaphor under study within the framework of the descriptive theory of metaphor. The authors described the structure of the metaphor, which consists of the denotative and significative descriptors: VIRUS and ENEMY. The research analysed the content of the conceptual metaphor constituted by a number of cognitive features underlying the inner cognitive mechanism of the metaphor formation: mapping and transfer. Using the English-language texts of US mass media, the authors analysed the connection between the content of the metaphor and its verbalisation. The research findings have proved that the cognitive mechanism of the metaphor formation is partly based on cross-domain mapping and partly on the transfer of some cognitive features across the domains.
