Speech Substandards Rendering in the Russian Translations of the Middle of the 20th Century

Abstract. The aim of the study is to generalize the practice of rendering speech substandards in the Russian translations of the middle of the 20th century in the context of a discussion between representatives of realistic and formally accurate translation. The scientific novelty of the study lies in the identification of the prevailing trends in the translation of speech substandards by representatives of different translation schools. As a result, it has been ascertained that the general tendency for rendering substandards is expressed in the use of the Russian colloquial-vernacular norm, regardless of the degree of expressiveness and systematic representation of the dialect or the vernacular in the original. This approach was consistent with the ideology aimed at purifying the language from vernacular and regional dialectisms.
