Images of Contemporary Writers in Literary Portraits of the Udmurt Prose Writer S. Samsonov

Abstract. The aim of the study is to determine the genre features of the literary portrait in the creative work of the Udmurt prose writer S. Samsonov (1931-1991) from the viewpoint of the development of new principles in constructing the image of a person of a creative profession in Russian publicism. Scientific novelty of the paper is accounted for by the fact that the genre of literary portrait in S. Samsonov’s essay writings has not yet been the subject of a separate study. It is the first time that S. Samsonov’s literary-publicistic texts on Udmurt writers have been introduced into scientific use and the process of transformation of the traditional type of topical and portrait essays into the genre of literary portrait in the national literature has been shown using S. Samsonov’s works as an example. The paper describes the principles used in the genre of literary portrait dedicated to the authentic recreation of the images of the most significant Udmurt writers of the second half of the XX century. Unlike traditional biographical narratives and portrait essays, Samsonov’s genre of literary portrait focuses on the image of an intellectual character recreated on the basis of the author’s memories and observations. The results of the study indicate the emergence of a new genre entity, i.e. the literary portrait, in the Udmurt literature of the late XX century. By analysing S. Samsonov’s essay texts it is possible to identify the genre-forming features of the literary portrait, which are determined by the author’s desire to show the creative appearance and personal traits of a contemporary writer.
