Symbiosis of Linguistic and Cultural Approaches in Literary Text Analysis and Translation (by the Material of Realia Translation in V. Nabokov’s Novel “Camera Obscura” / “Laughter in the Dark” / “Smekh v temnote” («Смех в темноте»))

Abstract. The study aims to shed light on the essence and specifics of realia transformation from the linguocultural and translation perspectives using Vladimir Nabokov’s original work “Camera Obscura” and its translation into English “Laughter in the Dark”, as well as the back translation of “Laughter in the Dark” into Russian made by Alexander Mikhailovich Luxemburg (Russian translator and Nabokov scholar, Doctor in Philology), where the factor of the author’s bilingualism occupies a decisive place in making translation decisions and expanding the mental capabilities of the translator. The study is original in that it represents the first attempt to analyse Vladimir Nabokov’s works not only by comparing the original work and its English translation made by the author, but also by involving the third version of the text, i.e. the back translation into Russian of the author’s translation. The results of the study reveal the essence of bilingualism in the translation of the author’s works and indicate that the translator must adhere to the principle of aesthetic unity of both texts and their correspondence to two systems of meanings taking into account linguocultural differences when translating works of fiction.
