The World of an Udmurt Woman in the Lyric Poetry of Ashalchi Oki

Abstract. The purpose of the study is to characterise the emotional mood of the lyric poetry of the Udmurt poetess Ashalchi Oki (Akilina Grigorievna Vekshina, 1898-1973). In her book of poems «Сюрес дурын» (“By the Road”, 1925), Ashalchi Oki in a fairly complete manner sheds light on the world perception of an Udmurt woman who realised her own identity in the 1920s. Scientific novelty of the paper lies in the fact that this is the first time that Ashalchi Oki’s poems are considered in the light of the “emotional mood” category elaborated by B. O. Korman. A specific female view of the changing world is manifested in Ashalchi Oki’s poems. As a result of the study, it has been found that the female persona of Ashalchi Oki’s poems strives to fit into a new life, feels the freedom, but is not yet free. The inner world of a woman is divided into three categories: mood - heart - soul, each of which is revealed in different ways in a particular work. The concept of “fate” in Ashalchi Oki’s writings is less related to divine providence or astrological signs, the predominant connotations are “fate as a connection”, “fate as justice”, “fate as fetters” in their realistic meanings.
