Use of Synonyms in Dictionary Definitions of Neologisms (by the Material of the German Language)

Abstract. The study aims to describe the possibilities of using synonyms in dictionary definitions of neologisms. The article analyses the material from the German dictionary "Unsere W?rter des Jahrzehnts 2000-2010" / "Our Words of the 2000-2010 Decade". Scientific novelty of the study lies in considering the lexicographic recording of the current vocabulary, which entered the German language permanently in the first decade of the XXI century and was included in the Duden dictionary in the second decade. As a result, the researcher has identified the use of the lexical units in dictionary definitions that are synonymous with an entry word or, which is most often the case, its components. It has been shown that the pairs consisting of German words and the pairs in which one of the words is borrowed can both function as synonyms.
