Semantic Adaptation of the German Substrate Toponyms in the Volga Region Toponymic Space

Abstract. The paper aims to reveal the influence of the German toponymic system on the modern Russian oeconymy. The German substrate toponyms were introduced into the Russian toponymic space by the Volga Germans, they functioned from the second half of the XVIII century till 1941. The article examines the toponymic aspect of interlingual interaction in the context of ethno-political events which resulted in official renaming. Scientific originality of the study lies in the fact that modern toponymy of the Volga region is considered as a heterogeneous language subsystem formed as a result of language and cultural contacts with the Germans and other ethnoses. As a result, it is shown that in the process of renaming, the German substrate toponyms underwent semantic transformations. Many German oeconyms were directly borrowed into the Russian oeconymy.
