Assessing Bilingual Child’s Russian-Language Speech Skills

Abstract. The paper aims to assess the Russian-language speech skills of bilingual children residing in Turkey. The article describes the phenomenon of bilingualism, identifies its basic types and presents results of a sociolinguistic survey among the bilingual children. Scientific originality of the study involves identifying speech mistakes of the Russian-Turkish bilingual junior schoolchildren who remained in the Russian-language environment at middle pre-school age. The findings indicate that bilingualism among the children surveyed belongs to the subordinate type and is unbalanced due to linguistic interference.
