A. N. Pypin’s "Notes on the Russian Literature" through the Lens of His Creative Biography

Abstract. The article contributes to studying A. N. Pypin’s biography, scientific and publicistic heritage. The paper analyzes his little-known publications of 1858-1859 - "Notes on the Russian Literature", "Notes on the Present-Day Russian Literature", "Notes on the Modern Russian Literature". The author examines A. N. Pypin’s basic postulates, reveals his views on the Russian literature development of the 1840-1850s, on creative work of the major writers and poets of the middle of the XIX century. The researcher identifies A. N. Pypin’s academic publications representing his views on the domestic literary process, which constitutes scientific originality of the study. As a result, it is proved that "Notes on the Russian Literature" is a valuable historical and biographical source revealing A. N. Pypin’s views on a number of issues, such as historical and literary process, theory and practice of literary creation, literature role in general cultural process of the 1840-1850s.
