Artistic Ethnography and Its Role in the Russian Literature of the XIX Century

Abstract. The purpose of the study is to draw attention to an issue, the solution of which could contribute to improving the level of philologists’ professional training and increasing productivity of results attained by the philological science. The article sheds light on the role of the terms "artistic ethnography" and "artistic ethnographism" in the modern literary criticism and raises the question of their significance in the XIX-century Russian writers’ creative activity. The authors do not agree that these terms have been attributed to the evaluation category that points to the insufficient degree of artistry and national character in works based on ethnographic material. Scientific novelty lies in addressing the literary issue of the past, the solution of which can serve modernity, both in the field of education and philological science. As a result, importance of studying the said issue is proved and lines of its research are indicated.
