Abstract. The study aims to define final particles as an independent class of words and to identify their specific nature. Scientific novelty of the study lies in the fact that the notion of final particles is clarified; it is the first time that specific nature of final particles as a separate class of words with its particular grammatical properties is determined; the paper is the first to consider criteria for distinguishing between final, modal and discursive particles in the German language. It is shown that differences between these groups of words are associated with the position in the sentence structure, intonation, semantic features. It is also the first time that description of semantic, syntactic and functional features of final particles in the dialogue is considered. As a result, it is proved that final particles are a separate class of words displaying particular properties and performing various functions in the course of communication.
