Abstract. The paper reveals specificity of the Scottish Renaissance poetry and shows how its heroic motives correlate with motives of the Scottish culture. Relevance of the research is conditioned by the fact that the problem of the Scottish Renaissance is poorly investigated and continues to attract the European researchers’ attention. The research objective is as follows: to provide a comparative analysis of heroic motives in poetry of Robert Henryson and William Dunbar. The researcher identifies specificity of heroic motives and traces their transformation in the Scottish Renaissance poetry, which constitutes scientific originality of the study. Poetical works of Robert Henryson and William Dunbar served as the research material. The results allow concluding that the Scottish Renaissance poetry preserved distinctive features of the medieval tradition (obligatory evaluative modus, accent on physical symbols).
