Kyazim Mechiev’s Poem "Сары Къош" ("Yellow Kosh") and the Karachay-Balkar "Жортуул жырла" ("Songs about Forays"): Ethno-Semantic Parallels

Abstract. The paper aims to reveal the basic semantic concepts in the poem "Сары Къош" ("Yellow Kosh") by Kyazim Mechiev, the Karachay-Balkar literary classic. This poem is the first literary work which openly criticizes the practice of forays accompanied by violence and robbery. Scientific originality of the study lies in the fact that the researcher for the first time analyses folk songs about forays and K. Mechiev’s poem through the lens of humanistic conceptions. The article actualizes the problem of protection from rapacious forays, the key problem of Mechiev’s poem. The research findings are as follows: the author reveals the main ideas of the poem, considers originality of artistic solutions and justifies the thesis that Mechiev uses the realistic approach when developing the artistic images system. The findings allow concluding on the poet’s well-considered civic attitude towards negative phenomena of the Caucasian life at the end of the XIX - the beginning of the XX century.
