Abstract. The research aims to identify features of depicting two opposite types of landscape, urban and rural, in Thomas Hardy’s creative work, using his novel "Tess of the d’Urbervilles" as an example. The article also carries out a comparative-historical analysis of difficulties of translating landscape into Russian, basing it on the material of microcontexts in English and two versions of its translation made by L. Nikiforov (1911), A. Krivtsova (2013). Scientific novelty of the research lies in taking a comparative-historical approach to studying translation transformations used within landscape microcontexts. As a result, it is proved that Thomas Hardy, being a prominent representative of the Romantic era, endows landscape with many functions, and translators belonging to different generations approach the choice of transformations in different ways, with varying degrees of liberty and adequacy.
