General Grounds for Studying Names of Groups of People in the Modern English Language

Abstract. The purpose of the research is to determine features of the lexical naming of associations or groups of people in modern English. The article presents results of studying a number of lexical units with the meaning "group of people" united according to a certain attribute: occupation, appearance, age, property or social status, etc. The research is novel in that it comprehensively examines the lexemes and combinations that convey the meaning of groups of people, in particular, the research is the first to describe the lexical units that name generational cohorts. As a result, the author has identified linguistic features of lexemes and combinations of lexemes with the meaning "group of people", determined their functional and speech characteristics.
