Abstract. The article is devoted to studying artistic originality of the novel "Milkman" (2018) by the modern Northern Irish English-speaking writer Anna Burns. The purpose of the study is to determine the features peculiar to interpretation of the image of the Irish woman, as well as the ways by which motifs of fear and longing are actualised in the work. Scientific novelty of the study lies in the fact that the theme of political terror in the early XX century in Northern Ireland has not been studied in much detail by both foreign and Russian literary critics. As a result of the study, it was found that the specific techniques used by A. Burns in the novel contribute to deconstruction of the traditional image of the Irish woman and creation of a different, fundamentally new one in the national (Irish) worldview.
