Peripheral Synonymic Chains of Adjectives of Size with the Meaning "Big Size" in the English Language

Abstract. The research objectives are as follows: to compile a corpus of the English adjectives of size with the meaning "big size", to arrange them into synonymic chains according to their lexico-semantic features. Scientific originality of the study lies in the fact that the authors provide a comprehensive functional-semantic description of the English adjectives of size with the meaning "big size" that contain the seme "big size" as well as the semes "heavy weight", "hardness", "elasticity", "boundlessness" and "vastness". As a result, peripheral synonymic chains of adjectives of size with the meaning "big size" are identified. The lexico-semantic group under study contains a large number of colloquialisms. Adjectives with semes of high degree of feature manifestation are always expressive and emotional.
