Origins of the Modern Turkish Fantasy

Abstract. The paper aims to prove that the modern Turkish fantasy takes its origin in the Ottoman literature of the XVIII century. The article analyses storyline and compositional peculiarities of the Ottoman/Turkish literary works containing elements of fantasy and magic. Scientific originality of the research lies in the fact that the author analyses certain prosaic works of the Ottoman writers for the first time in the domestic Turkic studies. The research findings are as follows: the author proves that "Muhayyel?t" ("Imaginations") by Ali Aziz Efendi, the earliest Turkish fantasy fiction, laid foundations for the national fantasy literature development.
