Abstract. The research aims to study the functioning of alogisms in a literary text. Based on the material of J. S. Foer’s short story, the paper analyses the variety of types of alogisms used by the author, explains the mechanism of their derivation, identifies their aesthetic function. Scientific novelty of the research lies in considering alogisms in relation to the notion of the essence of a literary text, understood as unity of its typological properties, including notionality, emotiveness, imagery and originality of the literary language form. As a result, it has been proved that alogisms, characterising the author’s thinking, are a means intentionally used in a literary text to represent its notional and emotive basis and system of images, determining the specificity of the writer’s individual style as a whole.
