Abstract. The paper aims to study the early stage versions of Gogol’s novella "Viy", their peculiarities and theatrical fate. The scientific originality of the research lies in the appeal to the insufficiently explored issue of the existence of dramatic adaptations of Gogol’s work on the Russian stage at the turn of the 19th-20th centuries. Theatrical history of the first remakes of "Viy" is restored based on the periodicals of that time. As a result, the study has revealed that M. L. Kropivnitskii’s staged version performed in the Ukrainian language and E. A. Shabelskaya’s "dramatic tale" were the most popular. Despite all the difference between them, there was an obvious tendency to turn Gogol’s work into a "fairy play", which left room for director’s and decorator’s creativity.
