Two-Worldness in the Novel "The Fifth Heart" by Dan Simmons

Abstract. The article considers the problem of two-worldness, correlation of real and illusionary in the novel "The Fifth Heart" by Dan Simmons. The paper aims to reveal the role of this theme in the novel artistic space. The researcher argues that the problem of reality and illusion, fusion of real and imaginary is one of the key problems of this literary work. The main personages pass through a complicated path between real and illusionary worlds, recognizing their true nature. Scientific originality of the study is conditioned by the fact that Dan Simmons’s creative work has not been previously investigated in this aspect. As a result, it is shown that the problem of two-worldness, correlation of real and illusionary in the life of individual and society becomes a recurrent theme of Simmons’s three novels dedicated to XIX-century events - "The Terror", "Drood" and "The Fifth Heart".
