Abstract. The article is devoted to the issue of using abbreviations in the Yakut language as exemplified in the Yakut-language magazines "Dalbar Khotun", "Uye". The study compensates for previous lack of comprehensive coverage of the abbreviation issue in the Yakut language, provides recommendations on how to spell abbreviations. The main body of the article consists of analysing common abbreviations functioning as an integral part of the language of the popular Yakut magazines. The author concludes that initial abbreviations of the sound type are widely used in the modern press, as well as that the Yakut language own abbreviations (not modelled after the Russian patterns) of the composite type are created. The research findings will be used for further study of abbreviations as a productive way of word-formation in the modern Yakut language, for identification of trends in evolution of the mass media language.
