Abstract. The article is devoted to the topical issue of borrowed words - one of the most notable linguistic phenomena in any language. The study aims to determine the meaning of the notion "borrowed word" in the Chinese linguistics, which is characterised by phonetic, semantic borrowings, as well as by loans and lettered words, and to examine evolution of lexicographical representation of borrowed words. Seven dictionaries have been analysed. The research is novel in that, along with dictionaries of the early XX century, recent dictionaries are analysed for the first time. In the course of the work, comparative-historical and systematic-descriptive methods have been used. Comparison of borrowed words dictionaries allows broadening general theoretical understanding of a borrowing. The attained results conclude that there are subjective and objective factors responsible for these evolutional changes.
