Revolutionary China in N. S. Tikhonov’s Story "The Friend of the People"

Abstract. The study aims to determine the artistic concept of revolutionary China and the associated image of Sun Yat-sen in N. S. Tikhonov’s story "The Friend of the People" within the context of creative attitudes that the "Serapion brothers" had and A. M. Gorky’s view on the author’s writings. The research is novel in that it is the first to draw parallels between the images and motifs of "The Friend of the People" and the story "Mother". N. S. Tikhonov connected the characters’ fates to the great river, imparted the image of the working people’s paramount leader with Christian traits and created the image of a broken-hearted mother. The attained results have shown that N. S. Tikhonov deviated both from the "Serapion brothers", who valued candour, truth in literature, and from Gorky’s realism in depiction of the revolutionary movement and the people’s leader.
