Evolution of Private Detective’s Image in A. C. Doyle’s Prose

Abstract. The research objective is to trace evolution of "high literature" images - from a romantic hero to a human being - by the example of Sherlock Holmes’s image inspired by E. A. Poe’s romantic personage, Auguste Dupin. Scientific originality of the paper involves analysing evolution of Holmes’s image originally depicted as an intellectual and gradually humanizing. Caring for his client’s safety, sympathizing with a criminal or expressing devotion to his companion, Doyle’s personage gradually reveals kindness of his heart. Finally, the researcher draws the following conclusions: sympathy for a victim/criminal, friendship with Watson and a comprehensive analysis of a criminal’s psychology contribute to evolution of Holmes’s image.
