Insincere Speech Acts in the English-language University Novels

Abstract. The paper aims to examine the basic characteristics of insincere speech acts and to reveal peculiarities of their usage in the English-language university prose. Scientific originality of the study lies in the fact that the speech act theory is for the first time applied to university prose. The theoretical part of the paper provides the basic genre characteristics of university novels and the basic points of the theory of speech acts and insincere discourse. The study is focused on identifying the features of insincere discourse: non-facts, ambiguity and denial of facts. The findings indicate obvious prevalence of insincere assertives.
