Universal and Nationally Specific Semantic Features of the Lexemes Серый and Grey in Colourative Collocations of Newspaper Discourse

Abstract. The article examines colourative collocations within the framework of combinatorial lexicology, which studies syntagmatic relations of lexical units and their combinatorial potential. The researchers’ attention is focused on the collocations used in the Russian-language and English-language newspaper discourse. The paper reveals specificity of the colourative collocation as a combinatorially conditioned lexical unit whose usage is determined by colour semantics and by the features of newspaper discourse. It is shown that the analysed lexical units differ in the level of semantic integrity of their components. The contrastive analysis method is applied to identify universal and nationally specific semantic features of colouratives.
