Motive of Temptation in L. M. Leonov’s Novelistics

Abstract. The article analyses motive of temptation in L. M. Leonov’s novels "The Thief", "Sot", "Road to the Ocean". This motive has not been previously investigated in Leonov studies (with the exception of the writer’s final novel "The Pyramid") but it obviously bears artistic meaning for him - the writer developed this theme throughout his creative work. It is shown that motive of temptation in Leonov’s works traces its origin to the Scripture texts and folkloric stories and is supplemented with social and everyday (novels "The Thief", "The Pyramid") or prognostic interpretation: the characters’ vulnerability to temptation testifies their spiritual downfall and simultaneously accentuates humanistic pathos of the novel.
