N. Litvinov’s Approach to Classifying the Chinese Character Radicals

Abstract. The purpose of the study is to identify the main principles of classifying hieroglyphic signs basing on N. Litvinov’s works. Scientific novelty lies in the fact that N. Litvinov’s approach is a fresh take on the issue of studying radical hieroglyphic signs. As opposed to the classical model of dividing graphemes into lexical sets, the author of the new approach has provided a comprehensive comparative study of individual hieroglyphic signs divided into pairs according to their semantic and morphological features, their meaning in the traditional Chinese philosophy and culture and their correlation with languages of other nations. As a result, distinctive features of N. Litvinov’s scientific methodology are identified; it is shown that the studied classification has not received deserved attention yet and has not gained traction in the Russian sinology; the study of the Chinese character radicals holds great prospects beyond the scope of linguistics, which is accounted for by the significance that the Chinese character radical has as a systemic culture pattern.
