Semantic Potential of Passive Constructions in the English-Language Scientific Discourse

Abstract. The study aims to identify semantic types of passive constructions in the English-language scientific discourse using material of different functional genres. Scientific novelty of the work lies in the fact that, while considering semantics of the passive construction, the method of role-semantic analysis is used for the first time to identify deep semantic configurations of the specified constructions and to determine frequent semantic types of passive voice in scientific speech. As a result of the research, 21 models of semantic configurations of passive constructions have been identified, the proportion of passives with different lexical and semantic load in the English-language scientific discourse is revealed and reasons for such distribution are given.
