Preserving Cultural Potential in Translation of the American Realia into Russian (by the Material of D. Tartt’s Novel "The Little Friend")

Abstract. The study aims to identify the most successful ways of translating realia of D. Tartt’s work "The Little Friend" that are foreign to the Russian person, while preserving the cultural potential of the original. Scientific novelty of the article lies in finding ways of preserving the cultural potential of the original by means of a comparative-contrastive analysis of two translation variants of the same novel, taking into account social and cultural context of the time when they were made. As a result, it was found that the foreignization tactic is characterised by adequate translation of the original’s pragmatics, an important component of which is the cultural potential of the work, while the use of the domestication tactic strips the original text of the author’s intention and cultural specificity peculiar to it.
