History of Studying Onomatopoetic Words in the Udmurt Language

Abstract. The paper discusses a controversial issue of the Udmurt linguistics - categorial status of onomatopoetic words. The research objective is to trace history of studying onomatopoetic words in the Udmurt language. Scientific originality involves a comprehensive analysis of linguistic works dealing with these lexical units which serve to describe the sounds produced by physical objects or to create a sound image of motions, states, qualities, etc. The following conclusions are justified: till the 1990s, the Udmurt linguists tended to classify these lexical units as unchangeable words and from the viewpoint of part-of-speech affiliation - as adverbs or interjections, relying exclusively on the fact that onomatopoetic words are morphologically unchangeable.
