Deformation as Strategy to Translate Movie Titles: Case Study of the English-Russian and English-Chinese Translations

Abstract. The article considers deformation as a strategy to translate movie titles. The paper aims to reveal causes and specificity of deformations in movie title translation. Scientific originality of the study lies in the fact that the researcher provides a quantitative and comparative-contrastive analysis of strategies to translate movie titles by the material of the English-Russian and English-Chinese translations, examines causes of deformations taking into account specificity of source-language and target-language texts, linguo-cultural factors influencing translation activity. The research findings are as follows: the author introduces a classification of translation deformations, identifies similarities and differences in the choice of translation deformation when translating movie titles from English into Russian and Chinese, and clarifies causes of translation deformations.
