Referential Status of Personal Names in the Function of a Spatial Localizer in the English and Tatar Languages

Abstract. The paper aims to identify the referential status of personal names in the function of a spatial localizer in the English and Tatar languages. The author justifies the thesis that the referential meaning of personal names is determined by the syntactic function of a spatial localizer, which constitutes scientific originality of the study. The analysis indicates that in both the languages, personal names can function as adverbial modifiers of place. In the English language, personal names most frequently function as direct objects indicating spatial location. Formally proper names designate a human being; at the deeper level they represent his spatial location. Actually, such localizers as "home", "flat" are often omitted and are replaced by personal names of its inhabitants. The conducted research allows concluding that in both the languages, personal names in the function of a spatial localizer have a special referential status.
