Bilingual Translator’s Techniques to Translate the Russian and Soviet Realia into English (by the Material of S. Dovlatov’s Cycle "The Suitcase")

Abstract. The research objective includes identifying peculiarities of translating the Russian and Soviet realia into English. S. Dovlatov’s cycle "The Suitcase" and its English translation performed by the bilingual translator A. Buis have served as the research material. Scientific originality of the study lies in the fact that the researchers for the first time identify the translation techniques used to translate realia from S. Dovlatov’s cycle and emphasize the necessity to take into account the extra-linguistic factor in order to preserve the emotional-evaluative meaning of the translated realia. The findings indicate that a translator’s background knowledge largely determines the choice of a translation technique, which allows the target reader to understand cultural and historical context of the text being translated.
