Structural-Etymological Analysis of the English Phraseological Units in the Sphere of Sport with the Onym Component (by the Material of the English Language)

Abstract. The article examines onyms, in particular, anthroponyms and toponyms, in the structure of the English phraseological units in the sphere of sport. The paper presents results of analysing these lexical units, suggests their structural and part-of-speech classification. The research material includes phraseological units with the onym component acquired from lexicographical sources. The authors emphasize that the mentioned units serve as a means to preserve and transfer national cultural and historical heritage, in this case, in the sphere of sport. Etymological analysis of phraseological units under study is conducted; most frequent structural types are identified and prevailing formative models are ascertained.
