ITALICS IN I. S. TURGENEV’S NOVEL "FATHERS AND SONS"

Abstract. The article for the first time considers italics as a graphical means in I. S. Turgenev’s novel "Fathers and Sons". The analysis has allowed the researcher to identify and describe the most frequent functions of italics in this literary work. The interaction of italics with other components of poetics is traced. Special attention is paid to studying the role of italics in the storyline and compositional structure of the novel and in its imaginative system. The findings lead to the conclusion that the writer uses italics to describe the basic social and political conflict and to express sympathy to his personages.
