SIMILARITIES AND DIFFERENCES BETWEEN L. N. TOLSTOY’S DOCTRINE IN THE NOVEL "RESURRECTION" AND J. SWIFT’S IDEOLOGY

Abstract. The article examines interrelation between J. Swift’s creative work and L. N. Tolstoy’s novel "Resurrection", which has become relevant nowadays due to the growing "Christianization" of the society. The paper argues that in "Resurrection", the main problem is correlation of ideology and artistry, which is expressed through "summarization", allegory, parable-like narration, didacticism. The identified features allow the researcher to draw parallels with J. Swift’s creative work (at the headline level, in the semantics of anthroponyms, in the description of the Eucharistic ritual) and to identify difference at the level of the author’s intention. For the first time the paper puts forward a proposition that the writers were alike as word-painters and antagonistic as thinkers.
