Abstract. The topicality of the study is conditioned by the fact that business correspondence in the English and German languages is a relevant research area. The research objectives are as follows: to examine linguistic specificity of written business communication, to consider the conception of modality and its types, to identify the lexical means expressing the category of modality in the English and German languages, to reveal meaningful differences in the usage of modal verbs in written business correspondence of both the languages. The paper analyses differences in the frequency of modal verbs usage and identifies the dominant type of modality in business correspondence. The findings can be useful for teaching business writing.
